Jasper is her imaginary seahorse friend who helps her through the horrors of growing up with an abusive father and an alcoholic mother.
Ari has 5 other sisters who go through the same horrible things, and even though they can lean on each other for support, they sadly start to drift apart because of the traumatic experiences they go through under the same roof. My heart was breaking for her while I was cheering on her, and as I read on, I realized that Ari is one of those fictional characters whom I would really love to meet in real life.
